Cllr Weir at Stormont

North Down DUP MLA Councillor Peter Weir was disgusted to learn of the vandalism of Bangor Town Hall last Thursday evening. White paint was daubed on the front door of the historic Bangor Castle and the nearby North Down Museum. These acts of vandalism have been linked to the ongoing Loyalist protests against North Down Borough Council. Speaking today the North Down said:

“I was saddened to learn of the vandalism caused to Bangor Castle and North Down Museum last Thursday evening. These acts of mindless criminal damage to historic buildings in North Down are not the way to settle differing opinions nor will they help to settle the out standing issues between the loyalist communities and the Council.

While I have sympathy for and indeed support the campaign for the renaming of the Boyne and 3 other bridges in Bangor, this is not the way to further the argument in favour of renaming the Bridge. These acts of mindless criminal behaviour are just going to further strain community relations in North Down and will not lead to favourable outcome in resolving the outstanding issues.

I would urge those responsible for these attacks to desist from further acts of criminal damage. These acts have no place in our society and will not help in promoting the protestant culture or image in North Down. I would urge anyone with any information regarding the attacks to contact Bangor PSNI and assist them with their inquiries.”
