“I am delighted to learn that Ballyholme Yacht Club have been told by Sport NI that they have been successful as the preferred site for the Elite Sailing Facility in Northern Ireland for the Olympics. While there is still a further hurdle to overcome in terms of the final decisions, it is great news that they have been beaten off all competition from all other parts of Northern Ireland. The officers of the Yacht Club are to be commended for what is an inspiring and extremely professionally put together proposal. The officers of North Down Borough Council are also to be commended for their help and support for this application.
This is a tremendous vote of confidence in North Down, and as well as being the events capital of Northern Ireland, we are gaining a growing reputation as a home of sport. This proposal has the potential to improve our seafront in North Down. Together with our new Leisure Centre and 50m pool, it means that we can play our full role in the 2012 Olympics. Even more importantly this will leave a lasting legacy that will benefit local residents for years to come.” |
