“I welcome the launch of the ADAPT grants programme for 2009-10, opening for applications. This grant is targeted at all arts, cultural, leisure and community organisations and aimed at building inclusion and equality for local halls and premises to enable people of disability to more actively participate in social activities. The grant is aimed at assisting venues to be adapted to increase disabled access, and the grants that can be applied for range between a minimum of £500 and a maximum of £2000. Items that could be claimed for include auxiliary aids such as text phones, accessible facilities such as signage, and adaptations such as ramps, handrails, lifts etc. These applications are on a rolling basis and will considered by panels in September, December and March in 09-10. Organisations applying should be aware that preference will be given to schemes that can be completed by March 2010.
This is an excellent scheme, which will be of benefit to both organised and the disabled community. It is thus a win-win situation. It is vital that local organisations such as churches, cultural organisations and community groups that look after premises are both aware of this grant, and also seize this opportunity, while the budget is still available. I understand that applications will be dealt with on a first come first served basis. North down should get its fair share of this funding, and so I appeal to local groups to apply as soon as possible. My office will be happy to help any groups, and forms can also be accessed via the internet through www.adaptni.org .” |
