DOMESTIC SECURITY PATROLLING A WORRYING DEVELOPMENT

Cllr Weir at Stormont

“I am deeply disturbed to hear of reports that in Bangor that residents have been contacted and offered the opportunity to pay for a private security service which will involve patrolling of streets with a van, and rapid response with a large dog. While the firm concerned appears to have all the appropriate security qualifications, clearances and insurances, I believe that this is an unsettling development. I believe that properly accredited private security firms have a role in protecting commercial premises, any extension of their role to responses to domestic properties is a step in the wrong direction.

This development, while reflecting genuine concerns, and no doubt genuinely motivated, could easily exacerbate community fears of crime, and escalate tension. While this is clearly a legitimate company, it could become very difficult to distinguish between genuine and legitimate security firms, and those with less scrupulous motivations. Deterring and responding to criminals in residential areas should be the sole preserve of the police. I understand people’s concerns, but the police are committed to extending and increasing community policing. I believe that while progress may be frustrating, but surely that route is the best and safest way forward for our society.”
