“I welcome the announcement today by Finance Minister, Sammy Wilson, in the Autumn monitoring round that £22.3 million will be made available from the Executive to support the Bombardier C Series Project. Taken together with about £10 million from DETI, this will unlock the financial support for the largest private investment scheme ever to be made in Northern Ireland, totaling about £500 million. Given the very tight financial circumstances that we are, and the fact that the only project that was funded in this round of spending was Swine Flu, it shows the commitment of the Executive to put the economy first.
As well as scale of the financial investment, the support for this project will have a major long term implication for jobs in the Greater Belfast area, and in particular for North Down. This long term project will cover eight years and will protect or create over 2000 jobs. A significant number of these jobs will be in North Down and surrounding areas. At these dire economic time this is a major boost to the long term economy, and will be welcomed by many people throughout North Down.” |
