“Following the publication of the Department of Social Development proposals for the development of the seafront of Bangor, I believe that we are facing some of the most crucial weeks in the history of North Down. The decisions taken in the next few weeks, following the end of the consultation, will help shape the future of North Down generally and Bangor in particular for years to come. While I appreciate that some local people have reservations, and that these proposals don not represent perfection, nevertheless I believe that these plans are bold and imaginative, and have the opportunity to transform our town for the better.
For many of us, we have waited long frustrating years for development to boost our area, and I believe that many in the Council have shared the frustration of residents, as we have seen a lack of movement from developers and government. We have seen a number of false dawns and near misses, which is why I believe it is vital that we grasp this window of opportunity and send a positive message in the current consultation. This will inevitably mean change, but the status quo is an option we maintain at our cost. I urge residents to embrace these bold proposals and take our town and our Borough towards regeneration and future prosperity.”
