“I am delighted at the announcement that the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure of confirmation of the funding for the proposed Olympic 50m pool for the new Leisure Centre in Bangor. The approval of the business case is the latest step in the creation of first class facilities that will benefit both the Borough and the whole of Northern Ireland. Council officers are worthy of credit for their foresight and hard work on this project, and this has paid off with this dividend. This announcement will ensure that the new Leisure Centre will be built in time for the 2012 Olympics, and create both a lasting legacy for the people of North Down, as well as in practice creating a first rate facility that will of benefit to local residents.
This decision is a vote of confidence in the people of North Down, as we will be the only part of Northern Ireland with such a facility, having beaten off all competition. It should also be remembered that the pool is part of a wider project to create a new Leisure complex for North Down, and will complement the Walled Garden at the centre of the Town. This major capital build is also a sign of financial prudence by the Council, and the delivery of this grant allows a first class facility at an affordable rate which will not overburden ratepayers in the future. This is a proud for North Down, and we can look forward to the future with confidence.” |
