WEIR WELCOMES ASSEMBLY SUPPORT FOR POLICE MUSEUM

Cllr Weir at Stormont

“I welcome the support of the Northern Ireland Assembly for the DUP motion calling for the establishment of a Police museum at Police Headquarters, Brooklyn, Knock Road, Belfast and for Government to provide the funding so that work can begin on it in 2009. I recently had the honour, along with Party colleagues, to meet  with representatives of the RUC George Foundation, and to tour the RUC Memorial Garden. Uppermost in our discussions was the Police Museum.

This is something that was promised long ago by the Northern Ireland Office, but it has been bogged down in process, and there are concerns that the NIO is dragging its feet. At one stage there were attempts to shunt off this project to the folk museum, but the clearly logical home of a museum detailing the local history and sacrifices of the Police is Police Headquarters beside the Memorial Garden. This would be a fitting tribute to the service of our brave police force down the years, and with the support of the NI Assembly, it is now time for the NIO to step up to the mark and deliver on its promises.”
